5 cool mobile apps every student should download

It’s September which means many students will be starting or returning to school, college or university here are 5 cool mobile apps that every student should download this term.

When starting a new term there are so many things to remember such as new locations, timetables, work and let’s not forget to go to those lectures and not sleep in.

With lots of clever mobile apps to choose from, I chose 5 which will benefit you.

Foursquare

This location detection mobile app has been around for a while.

It’s great for finding new places to hang out at lunchtimes, during free periods or meeting up after hours to make new friends or for activities.

Foursquare allows users to “check in” at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application by selecting from a list of places the application identifies in the nearby region.

Location detection is based on GPS hardware in the mobile device or network location provided by the application. Foursquare’s map is based on data from the OpenStreetMap project.

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is one of the most popular programmes on the market.

The apps include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.

You can create documents on your mobile phone or tablet and adapt it to fit your laptop screen. 

You can also download the 365 subscription which is free for students, and this includes WordArt, and you can check your speaker notes in PowerPoint.

Dragon Dictation

Typing and taking notes can be very challenging and it’s easy to miss important information.

With Dragon Dictation, you can save time as well as protect yourself from wrist ache or damage.

The editor will suggest words and the app will improve its accuracy as its gets to know your voice.

You can record your lecturer or yourself, and one of the main advantages this app offers is that it works in other languages other than English.

Todoist

The Todoist app has perfect features for students to keep on top of their readings, revision and assignments so you will never miss a deadline.

It’s easy to set up and manage lists as well as share them with others such as tutors, teachers, friends and study partners.

There’s also a feature called “Karma” which awards you points for ticking off your tasks, and you can upload files, recordings and photos.

Sleep Cycle

It’s essential that students get enough sleep especially during term time and when they first start a new year or a new course otherwise you may find yourself being left behind and missing valuable information which can be beneficial later on in the course.

Sleep Cycle is an app that uses your phone’s microphone and accelerometer to analyse your sleeping patterns and wake you up at the best time when you’re in your lightest sleep state (within a window that you set, so that you’re not late).

You don’t want to start your new course off on the wrong foot by oversleeping. There is also an updated version that measures your heart rate.
